Founded in 2002, Southbank Sinfonia (SbS) is an orchestra of young professional players whose work encompasses an unrivalled range of activity and music. The 2007 season included the orchestra’s fifth anniversary concert, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy; a return to the London Handel Festival and to the Anghiari Festival in Italy; the continuation of the successful series of family concerts at Cadogan Hall; and SbS’s first commercial recording with the acclaimed cellist Raphael Wallfisch, conducted by Simon Over. What makes SbS unique is the intensity of the programme combined with the professional training that lies at the heart of every project. Each year, SbS selects 32 players by audition and interview for an 8-month programme which comprises concerts for promoters and festivals across the UK; workshops and performances alongside leading UK orchestras; chamber music; education workshops and management training; and sessions spanning subjects from improvisation to public speaking.
The Southbank Sinfonia perform the Northern Trust Opening Concert at St James on Wednesday 24 September 2008 at 8.00pm.
